Update: Our fertility treatments post miscarriage

Hi All! The fight for our healthy sweet baby #2 continues. I wrote in my ‘next steps‘ blog that we were going to move forward with doing an egg retrieval. It was decided that after two miscarriages we should do embryo testing and freezing. This by no means eliminates the chance of a miscarriage but can help decrease the probability.

A brief summary of what this entails, to the people that aren’t familiar, is LOTS of medications and doctors appointments. You start a ridiculous amount of hormones (I was doing 5 shots a day) which you stay on for 11-14days. You go into the doctors office every other morning for bloodwork and ultrasound to see how your body is responding to the medications. Yippee! Once you’re good to go they schedule you for your retrieval day! On this day you show up to the surgery center and take a lovely little nap… brought on by the anesthesia you are given. While you are snoozing away they take out your, hopefully, healthy army of eggs! Over the next 5days they alert you on how the eggs are developing and then the ones that are still ‘alive’ and healthy at the end of the 5 days are frozen and tested for chromosomal abnormalities (these results take 2-3weeks to get back).

There you have it! In a nutshell.

So this is what I did in April. I did my 5 shots a day and got ready for my retrieval day. Side note: yes they hurt. yes it sucks. yes I gained weight. yes I complained. yes I was grumpy. yes I cried a lot. MOST importantly NO I don’t regret doing it.

We did the retrieval and unfortunately the results weren’t looking great. Roughly 85% of the eggs didn’t survive the first 5 days and it was decided that while we wait for the chromosomal results on the ones we had left we go forward with ANOTHER retrieval. Yup… ALL. OVER. AGAIN.

(Disclaimer: A ‘successful’ retrieval usually requires high amounts of estrogen is given. Since I am so high risk for blood clots this is tricky game of rock and hard place my doctors have to play.)

I started back up with all my medications. I cried, yelled and felt crappy all over again just to go back under anesthesia and PRAY this one worked better. TWO retrievals in one month. I was reaching a breaking point and needed something good. Anything.

Well folks… I don’t have all the testing back (takes 2-3weeks) but it looks like so far SO GOOD =) So while we wait for the official results I rest. I enjoy my little guy. I enjoy my AMAZING husband and I appreciate all we have to be thankful for. I appreciate my ridiculously thoughtful friends and family that have helped us over the past couple months. When you are thrown into hard times you learn REAL QUICK who is there and whose not. Between doctors appointments, not feeling well, and anesthesia days we couldn’t have done it without them. Most mornings my mom was showing up at my house at 630/7am to get Grey dressed and ready so I could leave for the doctor. I may feel horrible, at times, that my journey has been so hard when it comes to baby #2 but having people like her in my corner make me really count my blessings.

People always say how much they admire my strength and openness … I am ONLY this strong because of the amazing people I have in my corner  ❤️
